Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all you Mothers and Future Mothers out there!

I'm so lucky to have a great mom. I feel so blessed that we live close enough to see each other often. We can share our Quilting Passion together, and she is always teaching me so much. She has sucked me into the local quilting guilds, but I love it.

Last Sunday, I got a surprise. My kids made me breakfast and yelled "Happy Mother's Day!" I almost didn't want to tell them it was a week early. They made me oatmeal, a bowl of fruit, and toast--one with jam, the other with my favorite garlic butter. Yum. What a combination. =)

This Mother's Day weekend, MK and I spent Saturday at HMQS with my mom while R and the boys did all the Saturday chores! Sweet! They also gave me flowers and a beautiful new necklace. I love tulips!

Laughing at Your Own Joke

A Text Message conversation between my mom and me the day we were setting up for the Utah Quilt Festival.

Me to Mom: At Walmart. Do you need anything?
Mom to me: New brain? Nothing other than that.
Me to Mom: Abby Normal? I'll get right on that ;)
Mom to me: Ok.

She didn't get it. I had to explain it was a Young Frankenstein reference. Somehow, it isn't as funny anymore when you have to explain it. I thought I was hilarious. Apparently, I was the only one.

Email Conversation with My Mom

Context: My maternal grandmother passed away shortly after I arrived in Paris, France at the start my LDS Mission. I did see her before I left, but I wasn't able to return Stateside for her funeral. My mother and her siblings all gathered for the funeral. When they started to disperse her things among each other, they noticed several items had a note attached to the back which read, "This is Mary's when I'm done with it." There are five children, and it was only my aunt Mary's name on things! They all had a good laugh about it, as if Mary really would try to take these things from her own mother. To this day, Mary is still perplexed as to why grandma did this.

This week, I had the following email conversation with my mom:

Mom to me: Did I loan you my French Braid quilt books?  I can't find them and can't remember who I loaned them to.

Mom to me: *second email sent 15 minutes after the first* Found my books!  Sorry.

Me to Mom: Is this when you start labeling everything thing "This is Allison's when I'm done with it?" *grin* Glad you found it!

Mom to me: Smart Alec.

An Award Party?

Conversation with MK last night:
MK: Can I have some watermelon? Will you cut it?
Me: Not yet. It's for the ward party tomorrow night.

Conversation with MK this morning:
MK: *giddy with excitement* Tonight is your award party.
Me: *blank stare wondering what she is talking about--then it hits me* Um, no. Mommy's not getting an award. We are going to a party with our church ward.
MK: *sobers* Oh.
Me: But you're right--Mom does deserve an award.

Mother's Day

Saturday night, C told me very sternly to make sure I slept in since it was Mother's Day the next day. Then, at 8:20 Sunday morning I was poked awake by C. He led me out to the dinning table where the kids had prepared me breakfast. They had made me a large bowl of oatmeal, a super-sized bowl of mixed fruit, and 2 slices of banana bread. There was so much food I told them they had to help me eat it. We had a fun time eating breakfast all together. They gave me my presents they made for me. Although MK gave me mine on Thursday on the way home from preschool. (She came out to the car very excited about my surprise. Then she proceeded to tell me all about it and then opened my present for me so I could see it.)

Later, the kids and I did a craft project for the grandmothers.
I forgot to get a picture of it, but my mom took this picture where she hung it on her refrigerator.

C, S, and MK traced their hands, cut them out for the "plant" and then pasted on flowers they cut out. The pots have each of their names and says "Happy Mother's Day."
We had a great time putting it together.

Destined to be the Worst Mom Ever!

A couple days ago, the kids and I were driving home from school. I can't remember what started the conversation we went on, only that they were thanking me for something to which I responded by saying with a big grin "Aren't I the best mom ever?" (Note to self: never ask that question. It never ends well.) Here is how the conversation went after that fatal mistake:

Me: Aren't I the best mom ever?

C: No.

S: *nodding in agreement*

Me: *mock outrage because, I mean come on I'm great. Right?* What? I'm not?

C: No. If you were the best mom ever you'd let us do whatever we wanted whenever we wanted.

Me: Really? So, to be the best mom ever I have to let you do anything and everything you wanted?

S: Yes. That's why you're not the best mom ever.

Me: Well, I guess you are just going to be disappointed for the rest of your lives because it looks like I am destined to be the worst mom ever.

S: *sighs* yeah.

Me: So, if I were the best mom ever and let you do whatever you wanted whenever you wanted, what would you do?

C: *gets very excited--I seriously think he's thinking he's going to get this* I would get a ladder and climb to the top of the roof and jump off the side and....

Me: ....and break your legs? That sounds like a lot of fun. I can't imagine why I'd refuse that.

C: *still very excited* Oh, no I wouldn't. I'd put a big trampoline there and jump onto that.

Me: Huh. Well. I guess it's just too bad that I'm the worst mom ever because that wouldn't backfire at all.

S: *a very long drawn out sigh* yeah, too bad.

I am my Mother's Daughter

It is official. I have become just like my mother. I was always warned that this day would come, I just didn't expect it at 33 years of age. Today, instead of taking a nap during our mandatory Sunday Quite Time (again, thank you, mother) I worked on my quilt. I sat at a sewing machine quilting while I watched "McClintock!" And for good measure, I told my boys "the kitchen's closed!" when they wanted more food an hour after dinner was over.
